curiosity 02:58
we get so reckless looking for answers above we're so defenseless weak as our own bones and blood desperately, we're inching towards the sun 'cause light-years away something keeps calling our name can we call them back? we're building a rocket so tall wires will snap and rockets fall we get so reckless putting our lives above all that can't stop our curiosity 'cause light-years away something keeps calling our name beckoning us to space animals put in our place our saving grace to reiterate we're so small the human race couldn't embrace the stars

as we raise our heads, we saw an afterglow but the silver walls are so monochrome and the oxygen is so low they never planned to bring her home she is helpless now we can reach for the stars but can't fall down alive, they shot her into the empty night a flash of light, rocket thrusters burning bright survive, changing colors in the sky as time counts down for laika as we raise our heads, we saw a falling star and wherever you land, i know it can't be far you were the first to feel the weightlessness, the formlessness and helplessness wondering where you are she is stardust now we burn out bright but don't know how alive, they shot her into the empty night a flash of light, rocket thrusters burning bright survive, changing colors in the sky as time counts down for laika

another day 03:29
the sky burns black tonight as we leave to prove our hopes are right what must we look like? from way up in the atmosphere could you ever comprehend? could you ever comprehend? would you even know the fear? oh could you ever comprehend? could you even know the fear? you burned up so bright so distant, your home... so far as a thousand children wished upon your shooting star did you bark? did you yelp? as it all went up in purple flames do you wish someone you trusted would call your name? do you wish someone you trusted... and we say, we'll always get to see the light of day another day another day but it wasn't fair, you didn't have your say anyways, i'm ashamed we boxed you up and counted down your days another day another day till it all went up in purple flames

whirring up and the humming won't keep you up there's coffee on the table you laid your head, you spilled your cup it's 3 am in moscow, suborbital, you're feeling stumped 6 years of testing none of the dogs could properly grow up having second thoughts on the ethics of your research as you connect the dots from animal to animals hurt was it worth the cost to put our curiosity first? as you connect the dots as you connect the dots you said that you regret it in '98 assumed it wasn't worth it, but it's too late started out with lab rats called it good to end with apes decades of playing god to remove, displace, and delay shooting ourselves into space having second thoughts on the ethics of your research as you connect the dots from animal to animals hurt was it worth the cost to put our curiosity first? as you connect the dots as you connect the dots as you connect the dots as you connect the dots

satellite 03:52
calling to any voice that hears you to the void beneath you stretching out longer than you could ever know you've seen the people who revere you cower at the sunset as the stars come out reminds us what we will never know you are so much braver than you could ever know as you became a satellite, radiant with hope now we know it's safe to leave home as we raise our heads to the space between us no one could believe us we were close to heaven closer than we had ever known you've been paving ways for science inviting and reliant you deserve more to be loved and held and never left alone you are so much braver than you could ever know as you became a satellite, radiant with hope did you hear what they were saying on sputnik's radio? now we know it's safe to go home

about

you are so much braver than you could ever know

"the lives of perfect creatures" is a tragedy about dogs in space. it's about humanity and our insatiable curiosity around the stars and their meaning. it's about the loneliness that animals such as laika, or belka and strelka must've felt. we've sent a lot of lives into outer space, but not all got to make the choice themselves.

we recorded parts of this in 2015, and parts in 2017. i bit off a little more than i could chew taking on this project originally, and put the album off to focus on more immediate projects. sometimes you just gotta master something you mixed last year and take it for what it is, rough edges and all <3

the name is taken from an exhibit at "the museum of jurassic technology" in culver city, california. the exhibit moved me to tears near immediately, and i wrote "time counts down for laika" when i got home. the concept of animals in space and all the feelings surrounding really pull on my heartstrings, and i hope you can connect w/ these feelings too.

thank you to zenny, pedro, and devin for being patient and understanding
